Cynthia Wright-Johnson is the EMS for Children Department Director at the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems, the lead EMS Agency. The EMSC Department oversees the Pediatric EMS and Interfacility protocol development, Pediatric Specialty Center designation, and is home to Safe Kids Maryland and Risk Watch Maryland. Cyndy serves as the Principal Investigator for EMSC State Partnership Grant and Maryland Highway Safety Grant for CPS & OP in Healthcare and Bike Safety. Maryland’s EMSC department is the coordinating agency for the State’s work on the Federal EMSC Performance Measures, Family Advisory Network, Data & QI activities in pediatrics, and Injury Prevention & Preparedness for children, youth and families. Cyndy leads a team of the Maryland State Firemen’s Association (MSFA) Fire & Injury Prevention Life Safety Committee combining Safe Kids Maryland activities with Maryland Risk Watch partners. Annually, this team coordinates a spring Public Educator and Life Safety Seminar and supports the fall Mid Atlantic Life Safety Conference. Volunteers from across the state join with Safe Kids and Risk Watch Maryland at the June MSFA Convention for “Steps to Safety” – a series of interactive displays teaching prevention and life safety skills to children, youth and adults. Maryland EMS for Children primary mission is to ensure that all 1.7 million citizens under the age of 21 (and visitors) have a system that is ready to provide emergency care.
Maryland has 7 local Safe Kids Coalitions and 13 community partners that work on local, regional and state programs and projects. Safe Kids Maryland is also a member of the state highway safety Area Emphasis Teams and the Partnership for Safer Maryland.
